Data from “The Social Break-up” also indicates 18% of email users say they never open email from companies, and 77% of all US online consumers say they have become more cautious in the past year about giving their email addresses to companies.

Facebook Leads Top Website Engagement

Consumers Stressed, Still Buy More

However, one bright spot is that retail spending for the previous and upcoming 30 days appear to be on the upswing.

Chevy, Fox Ads Draw Super Bowl Viewers

nielsen-super-bowl-ads-most-watched.JPGAds for automaker Chevrolet and the Fox TV network dominated the list of most-watched ads during Super Bowl XLV on Sunday, February 6, 2011, according to new data from The Nielsen Company. The number one ad, featuring two guys describing a woman’s wild ride in a silver Chevrolet Camaro, was the most-watched commercial of all time. An estimated 119,628,000 viewers watched the ad, surpassing the previous record holder, a Doritos commercial from last year’s Super Bowl with 116,231,920 viewers.

comscore-explicit-core-search-gains-2010-feb-2011.JPGThe Microsoft Bing search engine displayed dramatic growth in 2010, according to a new white paper from comScore. “The 2010 US Digital Year in Review” indicates that Microsoft’s explicit core search volume (primarily represented by Bing) grew 29% during 2010, driven by an 8% increase in unique searchers and 20% increase in searches per searcher.

Americans See Unemployment as Top Problem

gallup-top-problem-feb-2011.JPGThirty-five percent of Americans name unemployment as the most important problem facing the US, according to results of a new Gallup Poll. This is the highest percentage since the economic slowdown began in December 2007 and higher than at any point since October 1983 (41%). Unemployment is the most important problem for the second month in a row, with the economy ranking second and healthcare third.

Consumer Spending Moderately Rises

For example, 36% of respondents say they are somewhat or very likely to take a vacation away from home lasting longer than a week in the next six months, up about 16% from 31% in September 2010.

Unauthorized Immigrant Population Stabilizes

pew-illegal-immigrant-feb-2011.jpgAs of March 2010, 11.2 million unauthorized immigrants were living in the US, virtually unchanged from a year earlier, according to new estimates from the Pew Hispanic Center, a project of the Pew Research Center. This stability in 2010 follows a two-year 7.5% decline from the peak of 12 million in 2007 to 11.1 million in 2009 that was the first significant reversal in a two-decade pattern of growth.

Bing Explicit Core Search Queries Grow 13%

Microsoft’s explicit core search queries rose from about 1.97 billion to about 2.22 billion.

Grandparents Growing into Major Consumer Segment

Nielsen research reveals that grandparent households spend 4.4% more per year than all other households, which equates to an extra spend of more than $300 a year.

Global Light Vehicle Sales Predicted to Rise 6%

jdpower-global-light-vehicle-feb-2011.JPGGlobal new light-vehicle sales this year are projected to reach 76.5 million units in 2011, which would surpass the record of 72 million light vehicles sold in 2010 by about 6%, according to J.D. Power and Associates Automotive Forecasting. In turn, last year’s sales beat the previous record of 70 million, set in 2007, by almost 3%.

However, data from “Love (and Sex) in the Age of Social Media” indicates there is a big difference between men and women (41% compared to 28%), which the study says indicates that more women than men need a physical connection to make romance work for them.
