TV Viewers Multitask

deloitte-digital-activities-while-watching-tv-feb11.gifNearly three-quarters of American consumers are multitasking while watching TV, according to a new study from Deloitte. Data from “State of the Media Democracy” indicates that while watching TV, 42% of US viewers are online, 29% are talking on cellphones or mobile devices, and 26% are sending instant messages or text messages.

Facebook Surges, Other SocNets Gain Traction

comscore-sconet-visitor-trend-feb-2011.JPGSocial networking category leader Facebook continued its momentum as it amassed millions of new users and people spent more and more of their time on the site, according to a new white paper from comScore. “The 2010 US Digital Year in Review” indicates that Facebook accounted for 10% of US page views in 2010, while three out of every 10 US internet sessions included a visit to the site.

Skies Brighten for Cloud Storage

deloitte-device-ownership-feb11.gifAccess to mobile devices and broadband have made the average consumer more connected to the internet than ever and new cloud computing-based online storage models have become real options for the mass market, according to a new study from Deloitte. Data from “State of the Media Democracy” indicates that most Americans own a device that allows them to easily connect to the Web; 85% of US consumers own a desktop computer, 68% own a laptop/netbook computer and 41% access the internet on their mobile phone.

Men Outspend Women in Jan.

Hulu Viewers Stay Busy

comscore-top10-video-properties-by-vistors-jan11-feb11.gifWhile online video site Hulu only ranked 10th among US sites in unique visitors during January 2010, those visitors produced high numbers of sessions and viewing minutes, according to new comScore Video Metrix data. Hulu ranked second for the month in average minutes per viewer (236.4) and third in viewing sessions (about 127 million).

8 in 10 Web Users Look for Online Health Data

pew-research-online-health-research-by-age-feb11.gifEight in 10 US internet users look online for health information, making it the third most popular online pursuit among all those tracked by the Pew Internet Project, following email (94%) and using a search engine (87%), according to a new study from the Pew Internet Project. Since one-quarter of adults do not go online, the percentage of online health information seekers is 59% among the total US adult population.

US Exercise Habits Slightly Improve

gallup-exercise-habits-trend-2008-2010-feb11.gifThe percentage of Americans who said they exercised for at least 30 minutes three or more days per week rose to 51.1% in 2010, up 3% from 49.6% in 2009, according to the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index. In addition, three in 10 US adults reported exercising for at least 30 minutes zero days per week, a slight improvement from 2009, but on par with 2008.

E-commerce Spending Grows 9% in 2010

comscore-e-commerce-2010-growth-feb-2011.JPGTotal U.S. e-commerce spending reached $227.6 billion in 2010, up 9% from the previous year, according to a new white paper from comScore. “The 2010 US Digital Year in Review” also indicates that on a year-over-year basis, travel e-commerce spending grew 6% to $85.2 billion, while retail (nontravel) e-commerce spending jumped 10% to $142.5 billion for the year.

Telecom Leads Q4 DOOH RFPs

adcentricity-dooh-q4-by-industry-activity-feb11.gifThe telecommunications industry represented more than 50% of Q4 2010 US RFPs for digital out-of-home (DOOH) advertising by significant dollar volume, according to a new report from Adcentricity. This is a category that did not make an appearance in Adcentricity’s top five DOOH RFP list in Q3 2010 and yet, based on activity volume, heavily over-influenced the top-line numbers at the expense of other categories.

Android Provides More than Half of Smartphone Impressions

Feb. New Light Vehicle Sales Purr

Power and Associates. February new-vehicle retail sales are projected to come in at 727,500 units, which represents a seasonally adjusted annualized rate (SAAR) of 10.3 million units.

Each counts more than half of those under 50, those with college degrees, and those making more than $90,000 a year among their users.

Google Becomes 2nd-Biggest US Smartphone OS in 2010

comscore-top-smartphone-platforms-year-review-feb11.gifThe rapid adoption of Google Android mobile devices during 2010 made Google the second-largest smartphone operating system (OS) in the US by the end of the year, trailing only market leader RIM, according to a new white paper from comScore. “The 2010 US Digital Year in Review” indicates that among smartphone OS platforms, RIM retained its lead with 31.6% market share in December 2010 (although decreasing roughly one-quarter from 41.6% the previous year).
