6 in 10 Obese Americans Resolve Weight Loss

harris-weightloss-resolution-feb11.gifApproximately six in 10 obese Americans (59%) and morbidly obese Americans (62%) have resolved to lose weight in 2011, according to results of a new Harris Poll. These percentages help skew the overall percentage to 44%, as the rate of weight loss resolution is much lower among overweight Americans (49%), normal weight Americans (23%) and underweight Americans (15%).

Close to Half of US Mobile Subscribers Use Mobile Media

comscore-mobile-market-enablers-2010-feb-2011.JPGIn December 2010, nearly 47% of mobile subscribers in the US were mobile media users (browsed the mobile web, accessed applications, downloaded content or accessed the mobile Internet via SMS), up about 17% from the previous year, according to a new report from comScore. Data from “The 2010 Mobile Year in Review” indicates the growth in mobile media usage is largely attributable to the growth in smartphone adoption, 3G/4G device ownership and the increasing ubiquity of unlimited data plans, all of which facilitate the consumption of mobile media.

Online Merchants Improve Fraud Management

cybersource-fraud-revenue-loss-2010-feb-2011.JPGFor the second consecutive year, North American online merchants improved their fraud management performance in 2010, according to the CyberSource 2011 Online Fraud Report. In 2008, online fraud hit an all-time peak of $4 billion, which dropped 17.5% year-over-year to $3.3 billion, and another 18% year-over-year to $2.7 billion in 2010. Compared to 2008, online fraud in 2010 dropped 32.5%.

Mobile Music to Generate $5.5B in ’15

1 in 3 Seniors in Developed World Ready for Retirement

Data from “The Global Impact of an Aging World” indicates almost 35% of European seniors and more than 30% of North American seniors (led by 38% of Canadian seniors) say they are financially ready for retirement.

Data from “The 2010 Mobile Year in Review” indicates social networking reached 57.9 million US mobile users in December 2010, up 56% from a little less than 40 million in December 2009.

Q4 Retail E-commerce Sales Hit $44B

Adjusted for seasonal variation but not for price changes, US retail e-commerce sales in Q4 2010 totaled $44.1 billion, up from $41.5 billion the previous quarter.

Wealthiest Americans Dramatically Increase Income

In contrast, the average income for the bottom 90% of the US population is $31,244.

US Gains on EU5 in Smartphone Adoption

Data from “The 2010 Mobile Year in Review” indicates the US had a smartphone install base of about 63.2 million in December 2010, compared to about 72.6 million in the EU5 nations of Italy, UK, Germany, Spain and France.
